JQ Laser Guide🔗
JQ Laser machines are all operated via PowerCut software:
Machine | Wattage | Work area (mm) | Software |
---|---|---|---|
JQ13090 | 150W | 1200 x 900 | PowerCut |
File Requirements for JQ Machines🔗
JQ machines require files in the .cut
format, which can only be generated using PowerCut. PowerCut is a legacy application that supports:
- DXF files up to version 2007
- Adobe Illustrator (.ai) files up to version 8
Attempting to open newer versions will result in an error.
For engraving, PowerCut also accepts raster image formats such as BMP, JPG, and PNG.
While PowerCut allows basic editing functions like colour reassignment, scaling, rotation, and line deletion, it is still recommended to import files that are clean and correctly prepared.
Note
- Files must be scaled accurately in millimeters.
- If some lines or curves are missing after import, try the following:
- Short lines or curves may not render correctly; scale the entire file up before import, then scale down afterward.
- Unsupported geometry types such as splines should be redrawn using standard line or arc elements.
- Text objects are partially supported but may lose positioning and scale as they are converted into single-line strokes. For best results, explode all text to outline curves before import.
Adjustments in PowerCut🔗
Layers (Colour) Management🔗
To change the layer (colour) of an object in PowerCut:
- Select the objects you want to modify.
- Click the colour swatches located at the bottom-left corner.
After assigning the correct colours, adjust the cut order by reordering the layers:
- In the Layer panel on the right, right-click a layer.
- Choose Up or Down to rearrange the sequence.
Note
- The machine follows the exact order of the layer list.
- Ensure layers are arranged in the following order:
- Engrave → Score → Cut.
Speed and Power Adjustment🔗
To adjust speed and power settings:
- Double-click on a layer to open its settings.
- Set Speed, Laser 1 Min, and Laser 1 Max according to the reference values in the parameter chart for your selected material.
Note
- You can also set the work mode to either Cut or Engrave depending on your needs.
- Imported images are automatically set to Engrave and cannot be changed.
Optimize and Time Estimates🔗
Once all settings are properly configured, you can optimize the cutting paths to reduce processing time and view an estimated duration for the cut.
In the Path tab on the right, explore the available options.
Click the Optimize button to optimize the toolpath and display a time estimate (Work Time H:MM:SS).
.cut File Export🔗
JQ machines only read .cut
laser files. To export this file type:
- Open the File menu and select Save As Laser...
- In the File Handling dialog, click the Save Laser File button to generate a
.cut
file.
Note
.cut
files are the only files readable by the laser cutter..cut
files must be saved in the root directory of the USB drive, not inside folders..cut
file names must be alphanumeric (letters and numbers only).- Some newer or large-capacity USB drives and external USB disks may not be compatible with the JQ machine.
Save as .pct File🔗
Clicking the save button in PowerCut, saves a .pct
file. These files can only be opened by PowerCut and are not compatible with the laser cutter.
Saving a .pct
file allows you to retain all project settings for future editing. Since the parameter chart provides reference values—not guaranteed settings—having a .pct
file enables easy adjustments on the day of cutting if necessary.
Info
The laser cutting room is equipped with one desktop PC with PowerCut installed. This PC may be used to modify project files on the day of cutting; however, during busy periods, many people may need ot use it. To avoid delays, it is recommended to bring your own laptop.
Machine Preparation (TA)🔗
Important
The instructions from here on should only be operated by the TA.
1. Turn On the Machine🔗
The JQ machine has multiple power switches; all must be turned ON for the machine to operate:
- Main Power Switch: Located on the right side of the machine. This is usually left ON and should only be turned off during extended periods of inactivity (e.g., summer break) for safety.
- Safety Switch: Positioned on top of the machine. It should be released (not engaged) unless an emergency occurs. To release, twist the button clockwise.
- Machine Power Switch: Flip the switch at the front of the machine. Ensure both the Laser and Chiller buttons are lit; if not, press them.
2. Load File from USB🔗
Insert USB drive into the USB port located at the top right of the control panel.
Press the UDisk button (bottom left of the panel) to access the USB drive.
Note
JQ machines can only read files located in the root directory of the USB drive (no folders).
File names must be alphanumeric (letters and numbers only).
Use the up/down arrow keys to select a file, then press the right arrow key to load it into the machine.
3. Place Your Material🔗
Place the material flat on the laser cutter bed.
If the laser head is in the way, use the arrow buttons to move it aside.
Note
If the material does not sit flat, use magnets to secure it.
4. Set Focal Length🔗
Position the laser head directly over the material.
Use the focal gauge to adjust the focal length:
- Twist locking ring (A) to loosen and manually adjust the laser head height.
- Twist in the opposite direction to tighten and lock the position.
Info
- If the focal gauge is missing, use a focal ruler to measure 8 mm from the bottom of the laser head to the material surface.
- Always re-check focus when using different material thicknesses.
- Ensure air is flowing from the laser head nozzle.
5. Set Origin and Check Boundary🔗
Move the laser head to the top-right corner of your material.
Press the Frame button to check the boundary of your job.
Ensure the material size is sufficient for the entire cutting area.
Note
Always set and check the origin and boundary for every job.
6. Start the Job🔗
Close the lid, then press the green Start button to begin the job.
Warning
JQ lasers are NOT equipped with lid safety detection.
For safety and proper fume extraction, never operate the laser with the lid open.
After Cutting🔗
- Wait at least 30 seconds before opening the lid to allow fumes to clear.
- Remove all material and offcuts from the machine.
Do not leave anything inside.
If continuing with additional jobs, return to step 2.
Shutting Down (TA)🔗
1. Clean up🔗
Make sure the user has removed all materials from the machine, including off cuts. This process also count towards usage duration.
2. Turn off the machine🔗
When you're finished, press the front Machine Power Switch to turn off the machine. Dont' use the Main Power Switch or Safety Switch to turn of the machine (unless it is a emergency).
3. Get paid🔗
Calcuate the duration of usage, and charge the user accordingly.
4. Check the focusing lense🔗
If the lense if dirty, clean it with cotton swab and alcohol as needed.
